Furniture (probably from the French 'fournir' — to provide) is the mass noun for the movable objects ('mobile' in Latin languages) intended to support various human activities such as seating and sleeping in beds, to hold objects at a convenient height for work using horizontal surfaces above the ground, or to store things. Storage furniture such as a nightstand often makes use of doors, drawers, shelves and locks to contain, organize or secure smaller objects such as clothes, tools, books, and household goods. (See List of furniture types.) Furniture can be a product of design and is considered a form of decorative art. In addition to furniture's functional role, it can serve a symbolic or religious purpose. Domestic furniture works to create, in conjunction with furnishings such as clocks and lighting, comfortable and convenient interior spaces. Furniture can be made from many materials, including metal, plastic, and wood. Furniture can be made using a variety of woodworking joints which often reflect the local culture. Q. I am looking at replacing my living room furniture this year and I need some suggestions? First, we have 2 cats (and yes they sometimes scratch the ends of the sofa and loveseat that we have now-in fact it looks horrible) 2. The upholstery fabic we have now has piles all over it? I don't want to go down that road again when we choose new living room furniture. The room it will go in will be sat on constantly (no formal living room in my house) and occasionally napped on. I need suggestions. I not not going to spend a fortune on the new furniture, but I would be willing to spend some extra for it to last for at least 5-7 years (if not longer). Any feedback would be appreciated. Asked by perleo - Mon Jan 1 10:04:48 2007 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments A. Yes leather is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. I have leather in the vehicle i drive and put some cloth seat covers on them. If you have cats they will ruin that leather. I have a cat long haired and she sheds on my furniture. I keep a blanket or sheet where she likes to sleep .. Its hard when you have cats. But i had rather have cloth at least you can use one of those sticky roller brushes and get most of it up. I have had the same sectional sleeper sofa for 10 yrs now.and it still looks good. Answered by kitty - Mon Jan 1 10:16:48 2007 How do I get furniture polish off of ceramic tile? Q. Our kitchen floor is ceramic tile. My husband wanted to spray Lysol but accidentally grabbed Pledge furniture polish instead and sprayed that. Ever since then the floor is super slippery. I've mopped and mopped and mopped but it's still slippery. How can I get the furniture polish off the tile? Asked by Jungle Girl - Sat Jun 28 07:59:19 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Try a degreaser like Pine Sol, Simple Green or Mean Green. You can also try LA It's totally awesome cleaner. You may have to apply full strength, let it get soapy on the floor and then clean it up. It may take a few times but it will work. Answered by erna7777 - Sat Jun 28 09:58:01 2008 How much do home decorators mark up furniture?
Q. I bought most my furniture through a home designer because she basicially designed my home inside with the builders and the furniture is unlike you can find at a furniture store...how much do you think she marked it up? plus she designed how everything looks inside. Asked by SimpleMan - Thu Apr 5 12:56:13 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. you are looking at 100% off of the shelf, store quality, for designer level in excess of 1000%, but you are paying. for someone to do the work that you could have done just as easily, and that is in essence how they make a living. a good quality living room suite can be had for under $1000, add a few fancy fabric colors and hard sell, and some sweet talk, and you have the bottom line of your bill.
