What songs sound like they re exorcising the songwriter s demons?
Q. You know, like, there was a monster eating the songwriter up inside and they just needed to put it in a song to get it out of them? BQ: This question was inspired by the real answer to why I chose writing as a profession. But there s a line in a Tom Waits song If I exorcise my devils, well my angels may leave too . Should I be worried about that?

A. First ones that come to my mind are.. Nine Inch Nails - Hurt And also The Becoming Some others are... Tool - H. Tool - Jimmy Tool - Pushit Tool - Bottom APC - The Package Radiohead - Street Spirit Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge Red Hot Chili Peppers - Warped Alice In Chains - Dirt AIC - Sickman AIC - Angry Chair AIC - Hate to Feel I know there's a lot more... BA: No I don't think so but it may feel like that sometimes. For some reason when we let go of those things (whatever they may be - demons, skeletons, defects, fears, resentments, etc.) we can feel empty... like there's nothing left or there is a part of us missing. But it's only temporary if we choose to fill the void with love. I know that sounds lame but it's true.

Would a songwriter feel bad if I changed one word in a song?
Q. I want to change one word in a song. The word used to mean something entirely different 50 years ago but now it has a connotation that sort of spoils the song. I'm not making any money off of performing this song. I'm just printing out the lyrics for future reference to sing in a nursing home or to children. I think the songwriter is about 80 years old now, if he hasn't died already.

A. Legally, maybe not, as the person above said. In reality however, I think it would be fine.

How do you become a songwriter?
Q. My Partner is a talented songwriter, and is already an ASCAP member... But how does she take it to the next level to actually sell her songs? Does she need to send Demo's out? If so, to whom?

A. she should personally sing her songs to a manager, a good manager can bring her in the right direction, Breaking into the business is hard and most do not make it, you need not only a great song but so more more. Talk to managers

How do you get work with a record company as a songwriter?
Q. is there an audition process for these things? how do i approach them? ideally i would like to get signed to a record company as a songwriter. all information much appriciated Thank you
Asked by M.Alexander - Sun Nov 1 13:27:06 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You need to get an agent, if your songs are good enough this shouldn't be a problem and different agents should fight to represent you, its rare record companies take on there own song writers, another route is getting performers to buy your work. But definitely get working with an agent or agency .

If a person is a great songwriter but only a decent singer what should he pursue?
Q. What I mean is I write great songs but I'm not too confident about my singing. Should I stick with the songwriting or follow my dream of becoming a recording artist? Or do I become a songwriter first and then use my connections to become a total rockstar baby!! Help.

A. There are songwriters out there who "supposedly" sing professionally that write much better than they sing (not all but most). Look at Pharrell. His singing and rapping isn't all that great, but he's still making a killing. That department doesn't really matter in the pop or mainstream world (which I think is a little unfortunate). So you could very well become a successful singer if your songwriting skills are strong. Not to say I would suggest going this route, but can you make money? SURE! Will you grow to be as great as Stevie and Prince who do both well and be AS successful with mediocre singing skills? No. But you can make this change. However, to make a stronger case, go and get professional voice lessons. A weak singer can grow… [cont.]

A. Okay, I'm going to pretend this question hasn't been asked and answered a million times before here and tell you what you want to know. It's a long, gruelling battle if you want to make it to the top, so be prepared to shed blood, sweat and tears. Figuratively. First become a sort of celebrity in your local area. You need to be popular with the people who live near you before you can get out onto the global stage, because they are the ones who will help you. Take a trip into the center of your town and look at what places may need acts. Let the owners know that you're available. Annual festivals such as craft festivals, malls with regular store openings and live music restaurants/bars are places that will always need acts. Check out what… [cont.]

How can I become an "indie" Contemporary Christian Singer-songwriter? Sites, books, tips I should see?
Q. I'm fairly astute regarding what it takes to become a secular, independent singer-songwriter, but how do I break into the Contemporary Christian genre on my own? Will you please suggest some websites, books, or other tips that might be useful to me? Thank you! Ella G, You have given me great, pertinent advice that is more "modern" than what I can find in some indie label books. I will use your advice, but I know that the procedure is different (somewhat) for "Christian" music, versus "secular" music. I know that there are different ways to promote the different genres, but I just don't know what the methods are. That is what I'm hoping to find out. Thanks, though.

Once you have some original music look for opportunities to play for either youth groups or local events like Christian Skate night at a local rink etc. Once you have enough confidence from that start looking into… [cont.]

A. Look for songwriting groups, classes, seminars, etc. in your area for advice, feedback and support. I've attached a link for the Dallas Songwriters Association, which sounds like a good place to start (I found it on Google--figured a city the size of Dallas had to have at least one songwriters group). If you want to perform your own songs, try a local open mic once you're comfortable w/ your songs & see how the general public reacts to them. If you are a student w/ summers free or just have some vacation time available, try a summer song camp. I've been going to the Swannanoa Gathering near Asheville, NC, (www.swangathering.org) for many years and can vouch for it as a great place to learn & be inspired. Carlos wanted to change a few things so the guy got a collaboration fee. He still made a lot of money and now he gets submission requests instead of his music just being thrown away by the A and R guys. Do you know anything I'm talking about? Get some books on the subject there is much to learn.

A. www.libraryofcongress.gov Put a recorded version of your songs, along with printed lyrics and the form you download and print from that site and send them in.I think it costs upwards of $40, but you can copyright all your songs together as a collective work. It will take at least 6 months to get back a certificate of copyright, but you should be safe to post your material online sooner than that.

How would I go about getting a manager to represent me as a solo songwriter/performer in the Southampton area.
Q. I come from Southampton in Hampshire and am totally useless at self publicity and promoting myself as a live solo music act. Has anyone got any ideas or could suggest any websites that I could provide a demo or audition for? Any help on this matter would be most appreciated!

A. A manager is not essential until you are signed - If you are on Myspace music or something similar and your songs are good enough just post the link to A&R Departments and publishers. Just remember that they are just as interested in your image as they are your music so amateurish text and poor photos will work against you. Post up your myspace address if you have one.
