A person who plays the accordion is called an accordionist. It is played by compressing or expanding a bellows whilst pressing buttons or keys, causing valves, called pallets, to open, which allow air to flow across strips of brass or steel, called reeds, that vibrate to produce sound inside the body. The instrument is sometimes considered a one-man-band as it needs no accompanying instrument. The performer normally plays the melody on buttons or keys on the right-hand manual, and the accompaniment—consisting of bass and pre-set chord buttons—on the left-hand manual. The accordion is often used in folk music in Europe, North America and South America. It is commonly associated with busking. Some popular music acts also make use of the instrument. Additionally, the accordion is sometimes used in both solo and orchestra performances of classical music. The oldest name for this group of instruments is actually harmonika, from the Greek harmonikos, meaning harmonic, musical. Today, native versions of the name accordion are more common. These names are a reference to the type of accordion patented by Cyrill Demian, which concerned "automatically coupled chords on the bass side". From Wikipedia under the

I am bracing myself for your flood of knowledge. dont tell me it's too complicated. I won't take it. Asked by The Pines - Sat Dec 27 00:40:47 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you have any knowledge whatsoever about an accordian, or if you've even seen one, you'd know that building your own would be a very big undertaking; especially if you have no training in that area. Answered by Starman - Sat Dec 27 00:46:32 2008 Why is the accordion so widely used in mexican music? Q. I hear it so much in mexican music, but the accordion is not of mexican origin. I think its german or some similar origin. But anyways, its of a strong european descent. How did it get adopted into mexican music so strongly? Asked by nomec182 - Mon Apr 20 12:59:36 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. This might come as a surprise to you, but the influence on Tejano Mexican music (it is not all Mexican music that use it) comes from the US. During the early 1930's they started copying the oompah beat of the waltzes and polka from the German and the Polish who settled in the area around New Braunfels, TX. They showed preference towards the diatonic accordion and a thing called a bajo sexto ( Mexican 12 string bass guitar). There was a musician who was dubbed El Flaco Jimenez who was mesmerized by the sound of the accordions in the polka dances he attended to in the San Antonio area, so he brought it to Mexico and added Spanish lyrics to the songs. Q. I'd like to find a decent piano accordion to purchase online for under $500 CAD. I'm looking on ebay and there are all sorts of different instruments available but there really aren't a lot of details available on ebay and I'm having trouble looking up and actually finding the models online. If you know of any music website that would sell a piano accordion it would be really helpful. Asked by Justin N - Sat Apr 3 10:07:52 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. At $500 Canadian, you're definitely looking at a used and/or lower quality instrument. Probably 48 bass; maybe 72 with a Chinese-made instrument. Also a fairly small palate of registers. Right now there is a good variety of instruments available, including some nice Italian instruments with 120 bass buttons at low prices because they have one or no bids. The problem with the eBay option is that you often have no recourse if you discover the instrument has air leaks or broken reeds.
