The acre is a unit of area in a number of different systems, including the imperial and U.S. customary systems. The most commonly used acres today are the international acre and, in the United States, the survey acre.

One international acre is equal to 4,046.8564224 m. One U.S. survey acre is equal to ⁄15,499,969 m = 4,046.8726098 m.

The area of one acre (red) overlaid on an American football field (green) and Association football field (blue).

One acre comprises 4,840 square yards or 43,560 square feet (which can be easily remembered as 44,000 square feet, less 1%; or as the product of 66 x 660). Because of alternative definitions of a yard or a foot, the exact size of an acre also varies slightly. Originally, an acre was understood as a selion of land sized at one furlong (660 ft) long and one chain (66 ft) wide; this may have also been understood as an approximation of the amount of land an ox could plow in one day. A square enclosing one acre is approximately 208 feet and 9 inches (63.6 meters) on a side. But as a unit of measure an acre has no prescribed configuration; any perimeter enclosing 43,560 ft is an acre in size.

The acre is often used to express areas of land. In the metric system, the hectare is commonly used for the same purpose. An acre is approximately 40% of a hectare.

One acre is 90.75 percent of a 53.33-yard-wide American football field. The full field, including the end zones, covers approximately 1.32 acres (0.53 ha).

What does an acre convert to in feet?
Q. Does anyone know what an acre converts to in linear feet? I have 5 acres and I want to know what that would be in feet for some contractor work coming up.

A. An acre is made up of 43,560 square feet, or about 208.71 feet by 208.71 feet to give you a rough idea of its size. Five acres would be approximately 217,800 square feet so your property size would be approximately 660 feet long by 330 feet wide (of course actual sizes would vary based on configuration, but that should give you a good idea of how big it is for reference).

How much more carbon does an acre of trees sequester versus an acre of Jatropha?
Q. Just wondering about the negative effects of deforestation and the growing trend of biofuel, specifically Jatropha which has a 200 gallons per acre average rate of production. IF we hope to actually reduce carbon emissions, is this crop adaantageous or destructive to the world's goal of carbon reduction, given the massive amounts of land that would be needed to produce a sufficient supply of biodiesel from Jatropha.

A. Jatropha is a shrub that is easy to grow and has become a source of plant oil for producing biodiesel in. Many farmers are planting jatropha as a supplement to their other farming income. The plant needs little water or fertilizer and can grow in a range of environments. Its golf ball-sized fruits yield a yellowish liquid that can be made into biodiesel. Jatropha is not edible. The main idea is to make use of its millions of acres of land where other plants will not grow as a result of depleted water tables. Some companies are investing in jatropha as well. In June, BP Plc said it would put $90 million into a biofuels startup that will develop jatropha in India. In Australia, Mission Biofuels Ltd. has planted jatropha on 66,000… [cont.]
