Q. I want a credit card. But everywhere I check its ages 18 and older. Isn't there one company that lets teenagers join?

A. First of all, they did the obvious: by moving goods around, they created markets and market economies, and this helped lead to more prosperity. But you also have to consider that almost no one traveled much farther than the neighbouring town during the middle ages. Merchants were an exception to this rule. By traveling as far as they did, they connected peoples who otherwise might have not even known about each other, let alone understood each other. This proved vital when the ideas of the Renaissance began to surface and spread. It also helped create an enormous interest in imperial conquest among Europeans, since they now knew what potential wealth lied beyond the seas.

How large was the largest crossbow poundage used in Middle Ages crossbows?
Q. The largest crossbow I've seen got 250 pounds. I've heard that Middle Ages crossbows got even higher poundage ratings. What is the highest poundage that any crossbow has ever achieved? Also, what is the longest draw length of any crossbow?

A. I don't know the prcise answer to your question but I expect that crossbows with 300 pound draw weights were not uncommon. In the latter part of the Middle Ages, military crossbows were made with heavy steel bows that required the use of rack and pinion or pulley systems to draw them to the ready position. However even the most powerful crossbows of the Middle-Ages were puny compared to a Roman Ballista. The Ballista was a crew served crossbow-like weapon. The "bow" was two seperate pieces. Each arm of the Ballista was inserted into a large twisted bundle of sinews which provided the spring power. The engine was c0cked with the aid of a windlass built into the stock. Allegedly ballistae were powerful enough to throw a heavy javelin… [cont.]
