Why do churches like the Church of Christ teach baptism is necessary to be saved?
Q. I have been raised to believe we are saved by faith and not works, We accept Jesus as savior, ask him to forgive us and try our best to live for him. I had a friend at work telling me the church she used to attend ( Church of Christ) taught you needed to be baptized. Reading scripture like John 3:16 I don't see that. Is there something I am missing?

A. Jesus said, "He that believes and is baptized shall be saved". (Mark 16:16) The phrase "shall be" clearly puts "saved" after "believes and is baptized". Baptism is the point in time when a repentant believer becomes a Christian (saved). Baptism is how God has appointed for us to receive the gift of salvation. 1 Peter 3:21 says, baptism now saves you -- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. (NASB) Baptism is a command of Christ. He said, He that believes and is baptized shall be saved. (Mark 16:16) Many will tell you that someone believes, is saved, and then he shall be baptized. This is not the same thing Jesus said. It is not in the same… [cont.]

What does your church do for the community?
Q. I absolutely love my church and all the people in it, but the focus seems to be more on recruiting new disciples than on helping the community. I want to get my church more involved in community services, but don't really know where to start. I would love to hear your ideas and experiences.

A. Well I am church of England and you will be unhappy to know that our church took our money and lost over US $ 1.5 billion in the stock market over the last decade and a similar amount in the commercial property market in the previous decade. Unfortunately they refuse to listen to people like myself who advocate investment in social housing for the poor (which would also give a steady, if modest rate of investment return for the church).

Can a church hold a Bull Roast in Maryland and still have the prize/money wheels and alcohol?
Q. We are planning to have a bull roast to raise money for our church and for other community organizations. Is it legal to have an open bar and the money or prize wheels? We already know that a one day liquor license and gaming license is required. Our only issue is specifically whether or not a church is allowed to have a fundraising event which includes gaming and liquor.

A. Dan B is correct. There are special licenses and permits that are needed for that type of fundraising. When alcohol is being sold you need a special license from your State liquor Authority. The best way to handle that is ask a local bar to sponsor your request.

A church is an association of people who share a particular belief system, particularly used in Christianity. The Christian concept "Church" (Greek εκκλησία — ekklesia, ref. Strong's Concordance — 1577) is mentioned in the New Testament, of the 114 occurrences. The Greek term εκκλησία — ekklesia, which literally means a "convocation", was a governmental and political term, used to denote a national assembly.
