The acre is a unit of area in a number of different systems, including the imperial and U.S. customary systems. The most commonly used acres today are the international acre and, in the United States, the survey acre.

One international acre is equal to 4,046.8564224 m. One U.S. survey acre is equal to ⁄15,499,969 m = 4,046.8726098 m.

The area of one acre (red) overlaid on an American football field

One acre comprises 4,840 square yards or 43,560 square feet (which can be easily remembered as 44,000 square feet, less 1%). Because of alternative definitions of a yard or a foot, the exact size of an acre also varies slightly. Originally, an acre was a selion of land one furlong (660 ft) long and one chain (66 ft) wide; the measure appears to have begun as an approximation of the amount of land an ox could plow in one day. However, an acre is a measure of area, and has no particular width, length or shape.

The acre is often used to express areas of land. In the metric system, the hectare is commonly used for the same purpose. An acre is approximately 40% of a hectare.

One acre is 90.75 yards of a 53.33-yard-wide American football field. The full field, including the end zones, covers approximately 1.32 acres.

What does an acre convert to in feet?
Q. Does anyone know what an acre converts to in linear feet? I have 5 acres and I want to know what that would be in feet for some contractor work coming up.

A. An acre is made up of 43,560 square feet, or about 208.71 feet by 208.71 feet to give you a rough idea of its size. Five acres would be approximately 217,800 square feet so your property size would be approximately 660 feet long by 330 feet wide (of course actual sizes would vary based on configuration, but that should give you a good idea of how big it is for reference).

Does an acre of land with large elevation changes have more surface area than a flat acre of land?
Q. I've read that an acre is measured in the horizontal direction only, so I think this is the case, but I just wanted to make sure. It makes sense to me that the acreage would be measured in this way, and not actually by walking distance for example. Thanks for your responses.

A. An acre is a 2-dimensional measure of land equaling 43,560 square feet. Size determines acreage, which may be land of any shape. Originally, an acre was the amount of land that could be worked by an animal team in a day.

Approximately how much would it cost to buy one acre of land?
Q. I live in Texas ~ I want to buy half an acre. I guess that's about 2,400 sq ft ~ I don't know.

A. it counts on where you live in Texas. If you lie in a little town like Temple TX then you can probably buy it fr about $2000 but if you live in the city of Houston it will probably cost you some where in the $5000. It's all about where you live
