The Catholic Church, also known as the Roman Catholic Church, is the world's largest Christian church, with more than a billion members. The Church's leader is the Pope who holds supreme authority in concert with the College of Bishops of which he is the head. A communion of the Western (Latin Rite) church and 22 autonomous Eastern Catholic churches (called particular churches) comprise a total of 2,795 dioceses in 2008. The Church defines its mission as spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, administering the sacraments and exercising charity. It operates social programs and institutions throughout the world including schools, universities, hospitals, missions, shelters and charities. The Catholic Church teaches that it is the original Church founded by Jesus upon the Apostles, among whom Simon Peter was chief. The Church teaches that its bishops, through apostolic succession, are consecrated successors of these apostles, and that the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) as the successor of Peter possesses a universal primacy of jurisdiction and pastoral care. Church doctrines have been defined through 21 ecumenical councils, following the example set by the first Apostles in the Council of Jerusalem. On the basis of reports in the Gospels of promises made by Jesus to his apostles, the Church maintains that it is guided by the Holy Spirit and so protected from falling into doctrinal error. Catholic beliefs are based on the deposit of Faith (containing both the Holy Bible and Sacred Tradition) handed down from the time of the Apostles, which are interpreted by the Church's teaching authority. Those beliefs are formally detailed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Formal Catholic worship is called the liturgy. The Eucharist is the central component of Catholic worship. With a history spanning almost two thousand years, the Church is the western world's oldest and largest institution, having played a prominent role in the politics and history of Western civilization since the 4th century. It maintains that it is the "One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church" founded by Jesus Christ, although it also believes that the Holy Spirit can make use of other Christian communities to bring people to salvation and that it is called to work for unity among Christians. Many historians claim that that collapse was also the time of the final victory of Christianity over paganism. Expressing a different viewpoint, Anglican bishop E. W. Barnes wrote: As classical civilization collapsed, Christianity ceased to be the noble faith of Jesus the Christ: it became a religion useful as the social cement of a world in dissolution. The Rise of Christianity. Before that collapse, during the second, third, and fourth centuries C.E., history records that in many ways those who claimed to follow Jesus kept themselves separate from the Roman world. But it also reveals the development of apostasy in… [cont.] Answered by arioch - Tue Nov 4 18:41:52 2008 Can someone convince me that Roman Catholicism (Catholic faith) is the true Faith? Q. Mark the Pope is the visible head of Christ Church on earth. As far as a trunk or branch between the two faiths there is none other than what some people might want to create. You might look at Catholic and Orthodox Churches like a business that a person started and left it in Charge of one person and all those who came after him to run the business. They will be held much more liable as to how well the business was ran and prospered in his absence. But during the founders absence there was a squabble over how much power one should have such as should one be the final authority or with the Foreman's and supervisors being equal in power but him being held in higher honor or like the Orthodox say first among equals. Well the head Man says no… [cont.] Answered by LH Catholic by Choice - Mon Jul 20 19:53:48 2009 What are the purposes of convents within Roman Catholicism?

This was the beginning of women religious orders. We know and the Church has been teaching us that religious life is part of Christian revelation, indeed, that it is a mystery. And, like all other mysteries, religious life is not only to be believed, but as far as is possible with God s grace, to be understood. In fact, to believe means to understand, to see with the eyes of faith what the natural man cannot comprehend. We do not believe in the unintelligible. All the while we realize, of course, that full comprehension of any of the mysteries, here of religious life, is impossible. Nevertheless, understanding growing understanding is necessary, even though what… [cont.] Answered by reflexologist - Sun Jun 7 21:08:23 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "roman catholicism" Former staff file suit against closed NY hospital - The Associated Press
