A. I would rent a toob from a river outfitter and go floating down the Guadalupe or Comal River. Then, camp out and have a BBQ. View the link to see the web cam on the river.

A. Traffic is not bad in the hill country unless you consider Austin as part of the hill county. Tyler is a fairly small town without too much traffic. The traffic in Houston is worse than in New York City.

Does anyone in the Texas Hill Country have a good source for large bags of perlite? (2,3,or4 cubic feet each)?
Q. I have easily acquired from 2 to 4 cubic foot bags of various grades of perlite in locations throughout North America but an associate in the Texas Hill Country is having great difficulty finding such perlite in 20 to 60 bag quantities -- or even small, large-bag quantities. (And he found it difficult to locate anything but tiny bags at retail chains.) It amazes me that in a hot and dry climate that would seem to beg for the use of perlite in lawns and golf greens would have perlite in such short supply. At first I thought he just wasn't trying hard enough in his online searches but I looked on my own and even found the wholesale agricultural buyer-and-seller-matching websites disappointing. A. Hi again. If you are wanting for Perlcrete mix, then I believe you can find 4 cu/ft bags of vermiculite at a nursery on Thousand Oaks in N. San Antonio. If this doesn't work, try masonry or horticulture supply stores. If you go the HeatStop route there is a very cheap supplier just south of San Antonio.

Texas swimming holes or other hill country musts?
Q. i was born and raised in Houston but have not explored the hill country or gone to any swimming holes/springs. A. Don's fish camp in Martindale, right outside of San Marcos is great. Used to go there all the time in college. Mostly a party spot for Texas State University, but you can swim, float the river. This float is more "natural" than floating the comal or guadalupe. Far less people. I hope this helps you find the place, I used to know how to get there.

A. Hamilton pool is definitely a great place, though sometimes, it can get crowded in the summer. Idk if it's free though. Bull creek is the greatest place to me. It doesn't get too crowded, and it's free. There is a rope swing , small waterfalls, areas to jump off, and there are also a lot of fish in the water which is fun, especially for kids. When you go down the creek a bit it get deeper, where people tube, dive or kayak. There is also a very shallow (ankle deep) area before the waterfalls, with a lot of minos where most people play with their little kids. The devils water hole at Inks Lake is also very fun. basically, it's where people jump and dive off of high rocks, but ot's pretty fun. It's been a while since i went there,… [cont.]

Are there tornadoes in the Texas Hill Country (New Braunfels)?
Q. If so, are they frequent and are they intense?

A. Frequent? I don't think they are frequent. Intense... all rain in Texas is intense. Reminder that bad weather normally results in the cold mass meeting the warm mass and boom. So, since we have really hot weather, we get brutal thunderboomers with hail and yes, sometimes thunderstorms.

It was one of the properties of Gastehaus Schmitt: So, if you're not into that, they have many others. That one was nice because it was within walking distance of everything downtown. But, they have more "romantic" ones further out in the country. I found a lot on the chamber of commerce website when I was looking: One of the ones that really piqued my interest was called the Cat's Meow. It was out in the country and had a nice whirlpool tub: There are so many to choose from, so you should be able to find something that suits you. A. I live in the Texas hill country near Dripping Springs. This area encompasses soft, chalky limestone to hard flinty limestone near the Pedernales River. This flinty rock is extremely tough on digging equipment. There is also the Llano uplift which is mainly granite. Limestone ranges in hardness from 2.3 up to 7 for Chert and Flint. Granite varies from 5.5 to 7 with the darker colors tending to have less quartz and be softer. Freeze depth in Central Texas is rarely more than three inches. Most winters the ground does not freeze at all, so pipe does not have to be buried deeply. There are trenching machines that will handle the softer limestones, but where harder rocks predominate it is best to bring in soil for a lawn. Raised beds… [cont.]

What are the advantages/disadvantages to moving to different parts of Texas?
Q. Choices are 1 West Texas such as El Paso or Midland area 2 Central Southern Texas/Hill Country like Austin or San Antonio or Marble Falls or 3 East Texas like Tyler or Longview area. I've already been to all these places and already know the West is very dry and the East more wet.
Asked by tlw - Sun Sep 27 04:53:31 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. West Texas is much flatter, drier and does not have as much vegatation. East Texas has the piny woods, is very humid and has a large amount of vegetation. The hill country is pretty much just like it sounds -- hilly and is otherwise sort of the transition area between east and west texas. All 3 have plenty of rural or city areas in which to live: Midland/Odessa, Lubbock, El Paso out West; Tyler/Longview, Nacogdoches/Lufkin, Beaumont/Pt. Arthur or even Houston in the East. The central area down the I-35 corridor is probably the most metropolitan (outside of Houston) with D/FW, Austin & San Antonio.
