A. I live in the Texas hill country near Dripping Springs. This area encompasses soft, chalky limestone to hard flinty limestone near the Pedernales River. This flinty rock is extremely tough on digging equipment. There is also the Llano uplift which is mainly granite. Limestone ranges in hardness from 2.3 up to 7 for Chert and Flint. Granite varies from 5.5 to 7 with the darker colors tending to have less quartz and be softer. Freeze depth in Central Texas is rarely more than three inches. Most winters the ground does not freeze at all, so pipe does not have to be buried deeply. There are trenching machines that will handle the softer limestones, but where harder rocks predominate it is best to bring in soil for a lawn. Raised beds… [cont.]
